Curry Baude

At the same counter since the Wall came down.

Curry Baude sits in the heritage-listed entrance building of Gesundbrunnen underground station, in the middle of Berlin-Wedding. It has been run since 1989 — since the fall of the Wall — by Reina Lehmann.

A butcher who makes his own sausage

Reina Lehmann is a trained butcher and runs his own butchery. So what goes over our counter is not off-the-shelf: the sausages are made to his own recipe. And the ketchup sauce, the thing that makes a currywurst a currywurst, is his own creation — a family secret.

A place, not a concept

Wedding is not a shop window. The people eating here are taxi drivers, builders, shift workers, neighbours, and travellers just off the train. That’s why we open at 6 a.m. on weekdays. And it’s why the recipe hasn’t changed in over three decades.

What others have written

Television has been here, and so have newspapers and review sites. On Kabel 1’s Abenteuer Alltag – so leben wir Deutschen, Reina Lehmann was called a “living legend” and Curry Baude the address for “the capital’s best sausage”. We don’t hang that in the window. But we’re glad of it.

Best of all, though, is if you just come by and taste it yourself.
